50 memories of Michael Jordan as he turns 50

February 17, 2013 By R.George

By SUN-TIMES STAFF
Those asked to recall their favorite Michael Jordan memory do so immediately. There is no hesitation, no time needed to cull memory banks because those who brushed up against his greatness recall those tales with such frequency.

Fifteen years since he last wore a Bulls uniform, and 10 years since playing in his last NBA game, the memories remain vivid because they have been repeated again and again in hotel lobbies, college gyms and at end-of-the-year banquets.

It may have been a decade since he last played, but Jordan’s shadow still looms large over the NBA. People still want to know what he was like and what it was like to play with or against him. That’s why, on his 50th birthday, we asked 50 people to share their favorite memories of Michael Jordan:

Female Golfer Bit by a Black Widow

February 12, 2013 By R.George

By Chris Yuscavage | Feb 12, 2013

Earlier today, we basically declared former Ohio State University head football coach Woody Hayes the toughest SOB of all time. After all, the guy once made by a point about toughness by letting a turtle bite his penis! But, now, a 24-year-old female golfer from Sweden by the name of Daniela Holmqvist has us rethinking our position.

Earlier this week, Holmqvist was playing a pre-qualifying round at the ISPS Handa Australian Open in Yarralumla, Australia and trying to pitch a ball out of the rough on the fourth hole of the course when she felt something bite her on the ankle. She looked down to see a large Black Widow spider on leg and quickly swatted it away. But, within minutes, she was on the ground in pain. From there, she told several nearby caddies what had happened to her and they started calling for help.

No.10 K-State loses to No.14 Kansas

February 12, 2013 By R.George

The Kansas State Wildcats fall to an angry flock of Jayhawks on Monday night. Instead of delivering the death blow to a fragile Kansas team, the No. 10 Wildcats didn’t bring enough lumber to hold off the No. 14 Jayhawks which are coming off of three straight losses in a row.

On all accounts , the in-state rival from these teams usually brings out a tougher match even if KU does come out victorious more often than not. However, K-State came out flat and KU had just a bit more to prove. By half-time the game was already over with K-State down by 18 with a score of 29 to 47. In the second half didn’t things didn’t fair any better as Kansas cruised to an uncontested 83 to 62 victory. Though Rodney McGruder had 20 points followed by Angel Rodriquez’s 17, K-State as a whole was off all night shooting only 40% from the field.

Kansas State was so atrocious, we’ll have to come back to them for a review perhaps on a better evening. You can’t get a top 10 ranking, then just stink up the joint this badly while getting a fair assessment so, we’ll just throw it out the window and trickle back if we can. Everybody has an off night from time to time so we’ll just chalk it up as that and see how they are in a couple weeks. Their next test will be against the Baylor Bears on February 16.

No. 1 Wolverines lose to No. 3 Hoosiers

February 4, 2013 By R.George

The No. 1 Michigan Wolverines sparred off with No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers Saturday night in a game which was highly anticipated and implications of the top ranked team in college basketball on the line. For the Wolverines, holding on to that top spot for a full week proved difficult as it has for so many. From the start the pace was exceptionally fast as Indian didn’t miss a shot in the first five minutes which gave the Hoosiers an early lead of 26 to 11.

By halftime the Wolverines managed to close that gap 36 to 32, but the Hoosiers just played really tough throughout. Indiana kept a comfortable lead as the game went back and forth. By the 1:30 mark, IU was up again by nine at 71 to 62 and essentially never looked back handing Michigan their second loss of the season. I’m sure GRIII wish he could get the game back as he was exceptionally quiet with two points but Burke and Hardaway Jr contributed 25 and 18 apiece. Indiana’s defense stayed in the man to man giving the Wolverines a hard time to find any rhythm and causing fits down low. At the end, it was Hoosiers 81, Wolverines 73.

Michigan will wish they could run this one back and they’ll have their chance on March 10th, in the meantime the only thing that is certain that a new number one will be announced on Monday. Michigan may have unfortunately caught a black eye on this one but they’ll bounce back come March Madness.
