Knights’ Empathy Questioned After Season Ticket Deferrals End

May 29, 2020 By Royal

By Las Vegas Review-Journal

It’s called congenital amusia, the scientific term for not being able to process pitch. The common term is tone deaf.

Charles Darwin, Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Pope Francis and the Irish poet William Butler Yeats were notable cases.

Judging from what has been happening off the ice this week, it may seem the Golden Knights have contracted a temporary case.

On Monday, Knights season ticket holders received notification they no longer will be allowed to defer payments on 2020-21 tickets. After the coronavirus shut everything down with a handful of games remaining in the 2019-20 season, they were given a furlough on making payments in March and April.

Full marks to the Knights for temporarily understanding.

But now icing has been waved off.

Payment was due Wednesday.

“We have had regular communication with our season ticket members throughout the pause with information regarding payment plan options and general updates as they have become available,” the Knights said in a statement. “We encourage all our members to connect with their respective service representative with questions, concerns and feedback regarding our communications or policies.“

Biggest Sporting Events In Las Vegas

May 11, 2020 By Royal

By Ovation

Las Vegas is one of the most well-known cities in the world and has been the home to some massive sporting events, not just boxing! With an NFL and NHL team soon to call Las Vegas home, sports will only become more prevalent in the town. Below are some of the biggest and most unique sporting events in the history of Las Vegas.

Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield II

Not only is this one of the most famous sporting events in Las Vegas history, but it is also one of the most iconic sports moments of all time. This fight featured two world-renowned heavyweights who were set to square off for the second time. The first fight between the 2 was a rare loss by Tyson, only adding to the drama of the rematch. The fight itself was for the heavyweight title, but the bitter rivalry between the two men made it take on a whole new life. In the first fight, Holyfield headbutted Mike Tyson giving him a gash above his eye.

It was ruled accidental by the ref, but clearly Iron Mike did not agree. During the second fight, yet another Holyfield headbutt caused a gash on Tyson’s head, only to be deemed accidental once again. Mike Tyson then did one of the most unbelievable things not only in sports, but history in general; bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear.

The video is truly shocking as Holyfield reacts with immense pain, if you haven’t seen it it is worth checking out. Forgetting this, “The Bite Fight” would have been one of the biggest bouts ever, but Tyson’s actions made it one of the most famous sporting events ever.

NBA Summer League

The NBA Summer League did not make our list because of how big it is right now, but how quickly it is growing and how big it could become. If you don’t know, the Las Vegas Summer League takes place every year in early July at the Thomas Mack Center located on UNLV campus. It is a showcase of the league’s top young players who were recently drafted as well as other top international and college players trying to make an NBA team.

The league is basically a big tryout for the NBA as 24 teams enter a team of NBA hopefuls to represent them. It has actually been played every summer since 2004, but this year’s season that will end tonight has taken on a life of it’s own. The top picks in the NBA draft are more accessible than ever before through social media and the digital age, meaning the anticipation for them is ever growing. This year the league took the leap from a few thousand basketball fanatics showing up to becoming a national sporting spectacle.

Every game from this year’s tournament was shown live on ESPN and it was the most talked about thing in sports. Dozens of this years games sold out and the NBA is doing a great job making it a family atmosphere. Though you may have missed this year’s summer league, be sure to check it out next year, whether you are a basketball fan or not.

THE EVOLUTION OF LAS VEGAS SPORTS TEAMS

April 28, 2020 By Royal

By Thed

Any native Vegas local will tell you that without having professional sports teams within city limits, they’ve always had to pick and choose other teams to root for during games. Las Vegas has struggled for years to try to get major league teams to our Valley. But as far as 2018 goes, professional Las Vegas sports teams have been the talk of the town.

Las Vegas has been a sports town for a long time, just not in the same way sports havens Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York are. Thousands of visitors flock to Las Vegas every year to watch and bet on events like the Super Bowl, March Madness, NASCAR, and championship boxing and UFC matches. But as far as the big four goes… NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB… Vegas has never been home for a big leaguer. The main reason for the delay of introducing major leagues to the Valley was the concern about Nevada’s gambling reputation and the possibility of fixed games. Several minor leagues have tried over the years, only lasting a few seasons.

Between the progress of the Las Vegas Raiders stadium, the move for the WNBA Aces, and the inaugural season of the Golden Knights, Vegas has become more than just a sports betting capital – it’s now a professional sports team hub. While we’ve seen several Las Vegas sports events pop up in the past and many failed attempts from other sports, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel on our road to being a professional sports team city.

Raiders Allegiant Stadium: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

April 22, 2020 By Royal

By Austin Boyd

After years of talk, the Raiders should finally be moving to Las Vegas for the 2020 NFL season. It’s not the first time the team has left Oakland, but this time, it feels like it will be the last. With the bright lights of Vegas on the horizon, things are about to change for Raider Nation. The Oakland Coliseum, though a legendary structure, is largely considered one of the worst sports venues around.

Mark Davis and the NFL have invested heavily in the Las Vegas stadium to ensure that it becomes one of the hottest tickets in town. While the team is saying goodbye to the Bay Area, the team will never forget its roots.

“There’s no question about it,” Davis said to NBC Sports. “The Raiders and Oakland grew up together. We were the stepchild of San Francisco. We were just Oakland. And I believe my dad took special pride in that and in building it up.

“The Raiders were born in Oakland, and Oakland will always be part of our DNA. There’s no doubt about that.”

There will always be unease for the team and a fan base when a franchise like the Raiders move. Below we’re going to go through everything that you need to know about the team’s new stadium in Las Vegas.
